Our Belgian IPA Hops

Our Belgian IPA Hops

Our IPA Vision

The LBJ Belgian IPA (India Pale Ale) was designed as an accessible brew in the IPA category with a lower bitter or hop presence than is typical with most craft style IPAs. With our Belgian IPA we wanted to target an IPA with fruitiness and spiciness coming from our signature Belgian yeast. Aromatically, we wanted to achieve tropical aromas of stone fruit, citrus, and pine.

Hop Blend

We blended El Dorado hops which bring tropical fruit, watermelon, and stone fruit, with Mosaic hops bringing a complex blend of floral, tropical, and earthy characteristics. We settled on a dry hopping rate that brought through all the aromas the hops were carrying without overpowering the clove-like phenols our Belgian yeast contributed.

Appearance and Taste

The beer pours a deep rich golden colour with an off-white head of foam. The initial flavour showcases the Belgian yeast fermentation characteristics leading into hop flavours of tropical stone fruit, melon, and citrus. We restrained the bitterness of this beer compared to other commercial examples. The finish has a slight sweetness mixed with the lingering bitterness.

Brewers Gold

The signature hop used in our flagship 1919 Belgian Pale Ale, Brewers Gold hops were the result of the open pollination of a wild Manitoban hop and an English hop.

El Dorado

El Dorado is a product of the Yakima Valley’s (Washington) cooler climate. It features a uniquely fruity flavour profile in addition to desirable bittering and aromatic properties. Its primary flavor character showcases a blend of tropical fruit, watermelon, and stone fruit.

Mosaic

Mosaic hops highlight intricate but clean flavour qualities and are known for their triple profile comprising of bittering, flavour and aroma. They are delightfully hoppy, with flavours of mango, pine, citrus, and herbs with aromas of tropical and stone fruit.

Future of our IPA

We’ve been extremely happy with the blend of Mosaic and El Dorado hops we settled on however we are looking to try more with our IPA. We are excited to test new hop combinations and dry hopping rates to explore new terrain with this beer. As we experiment more we will keep this page up to date so you know what to look for batch to batch. Stay tuned.
